SafeGarage is a board that wires to your garage door opener and an app that talks to it. This page says what we keep about you to make that work, where it lives, and what we never do with it. SafeGarage is a company in Manitoba, Canada, and this policy follows Canada’s privacy law, PIPEDA.

This website

This site sets no cookies and runs no analytics. Its one form is the order page: when you send an order request, we keep what you type there (your name, email, phone if you give it, the address to ship to, how many of each box, and your message) in our database, only to contact you about and ship that order. A notification with your name, city, province and order reaches our own phone through Apple’s or Google’s notification service. We never sell it or use it for ads. We keep it until you ask us to delete it: write to support@safegarage.ca. Our web server may keep ordinary connection logs for a short time to keep the site running.

Your account

You sign in to the app with Google or with Apple. We receive your name, your email address and, from Google, the address of your profile picture. We use them to know which garage is yours and to show your name in the app. We never see your Google or Apple password. Sign in with Apple lets you hide your real email; that works with SafeGarage.

Your garage

To run your door, the SafeGarage service keeps, for each board on your account:

The board keeps a secret of its own and a local key, made on the board. The service keeps only a fingerprint of the secret, never the secret itself. The local key is sent once to your phone and kept there; it is what lets the app talk to the board over your Wi-Fi without the internet.

Notifications

If you turn notifications on, we keep the token Apple or Google gives your phone so we can send them. Turning notifications off or signing out removes it.

Diagnostics

The app keeps its own short log on your phone. When something goes wrong, it sends that log to us so we can see what happened. It never contains your Wi-Fi password, the board’s keys, or the whole of any token. You can also send it yourself, or share it, from Account, then Diagnostics.

Where it lives

Our servers run in Canada, in the Toronto region, on DigitalOcean. Notifications go through Apple’s and Google’s notification services. Sign-in goes through Google and Apple. We do not sell, rent or share your information with anyone else, except Amazon when you link Alexa (below) and the carrier that delivers an order you placed, and we do not use it for advertising.

Home Assistant

If you connect your board to Home Assistant, that happens on your own Wi-Fi with a key the app shows you. Nothing about it passes through us. Anyone with that key on your Wi-Fi can open the door, so keep it to yourself.

Alexa

If you link Alexa to your account, Amazon receives the names of your doors that are set up and their boards’ identifiers, and, when Alexa asks, whether each is open or closed and whether its board is online. When you ask Alexa to open or close a door, Amazon sends us the request, and the door’s history shows it under your account. We keep a fingerprint of the token Alexa uses, never the token itself, and when Alexa last used it. Alexa asks for a voice code before opening a door; Amazon keeps and checks that code, and we never see it. What Amazon does with what it receives is covered by Amazon’s own privacy notice.

To stop it, tap Unlink in Account › Alexa in the app: Alexa can no longer reach your doors, and Amazon drops the link the next time Alexa tries to use it. Deleting your account does the same. Disabling the skill in the Alexa app stops Alexa using the link, but the link stays with us until you unlink it in the app.

How long, and how to delete

We keep your account and your garage’s data while you use SafeGarage. Delete your account from Account in the app: your account, sign-ins, sessions, notification settings and any link to Alexa are removed at once, and a board you owned is unlinked from you; its stored history is removed when the board is set up again. Removing a board in the app stops your phone from reaching it; the board itself keeps working until it is factory reset.

Without the app, write to support@safegarage.ca from the email address on your account and ask us to delete it. We remove the same things as the app does.

Your rights

You can ask to see what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or withdraw your consent by deleting your account. Write to support@safegarage.ca. If you are not satisfied with our answer you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.

Children

SafeGarage is for adults who own or run a home. We do not knowingly collect anything from children under 13.
